Hello My name is Mrs. Tracey Howell and I am very excited to be your child's 3rd Grade teacher. It is going to be a great year for everyone!! This year will mark my 20 year of teaching for the Forest Hills School District. For the first 13 years, I taught the Read To Succeed program in Kindergarten and Reading Recovery in 1st Grade , then for 4 years I was assigned to teach 2nd grade. I have found this assignment to be very exciting and rewarding. Over the past three years I was assigned to return to Kindergarten, not as a reading subordinate, but as a classroom teacher since I have many years of experience teaching the young students. During the upcoming 2018-19 school year I will be teaching all subjects to a 3rd Grade classroom. This year it will be especially exciting for me because I will be able to see how much some of my former Kindergarten students have grown over the past years.
I am a graduate of The Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and I hold a certificate in the area of Reading Recovery from Shippensburg University Of Pennsylvania. I will be using several of these Reading Recovery strategies in my classroom to help th students to become successful readers. I will be teaching them how to use what they know to figure out the parts of the word that are unknown and then blend it all together to successfully decode words in an unknown parts of a reading passage. We need to foster good reading habits that will enable the students to become successful readers that will lead to them becoming life long learners.
In addition to learning many different literacy skills, the children will also be learning many new math facts that they will need to master for their future success in school. You can help them to master these skills by doing a regular review of addition and subtration fact families on a daily basis.Once we move on the multiplication and division these fact families will need to be reviewed daily as well. By constantly reviewing these facts that they have already covered, it will be easier for the children to master the harder ones that we will be working later in the school year. We will also have a new list of high frequency and spelling words weekly that will need to be reviewed nightly. We will be learning lots of new things in science and social studies as well.
I hope to have your help and support during this new school year. You can do this by going through your child's book bag regularly and removing their daily completed work. Also please be sure to do regular reviews of my web page and calendar , as well as, The Forest Hills website for important information that you may need to help to guide you and your child as to how their day will begin.
If you ever have a question or need to contact me , please send me an email or call me at 487-7613 ext. 2729 either before 8:15 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m and we can speak about your concerns. I hope you and your child are as excited as I am about this year in Kindergarten and relax and know it will be great.
I cannot wait for the school year to start to see all of the children. I hope to help to make this year in 3rd Grade one they will remember because it was fabulous !
